A Hack for Searching Flickr Photos by Date While Waiting for Camera Roll to Come Back

For the technically challenged

I am not technically gifted. I write a crochet blog, and don’t really understand the tools I use. I accomplish this by following a series of proscribed steps, and more often than not, I manage to get things done, but when I can’t get things done, I find it enormously frustrating because I have no clue how to fix it, so I usually handle those moments by crying.

It’s been over a year now since SmugMug acquired Flickr, and at first is was fine. There was no difference to me the user, but the past few months, a feature called “Camera Roll” disappeared and was replaced with this message:

A message from Flickr about Camera Roll being down
Flickr’s message about Camera Roll

I am terrible about tagging my photos, and Camera Roll is a feature I had come to rely on because it allowed me to quickly navigate my photos by the date they had been taken.

Days were grouped into months, which were then grouped into years. If I wanted to look at photos I had taken in June of 2010, I was just four clicks away from where I wanted to be.

  • First click: the drop down menu to select Camera Roll.
  • Second click: show more years
  • Third click: 2010
  • Fourth click: June, the month that I wanted to review.

Apparently “Camera Roll” is much greater need of rest and relaxation than we had originally been led to believe, but I still sometimes need to search the many thousands of photos I have taken over the years, and in a moment of panicked frustration, I inadvertently discovered this work around.

I start by going to my Flickr homepage. Then I go to the pulldown menu under “You” and click on “Photostream”

How to use the “you” menu to get to your photostream

Once I get to my photostream page, I insert the cursor into the search box at the top right of the page:

Clicking in the search box once you get to your photostream so you can sort your photos by date

Then I click in the search box and hit return. This, in turn, gets me to a page where I have the option to do an Advanced search. Then I click on “Advanced” in the upper right quadrant of the screen:

The page that allows you to click on “advanced” so you can get to the page that allows you to enter a date range to search

Next, this screen comes up which allows me to search by date:

You finally reach your destination to be able to search your Flickr photos by date

I enter the date range for my search

Adding the date range for an advanced search at Flickr

and voila! I have a more manageable trove of photos to sort through:

You finally reach your destination of a set of photos to search that are limited by the date they were taken
The photos in the specified date range

Obviously this is a little more time consuming than the previous four clicks that got me to my destination when Camera Roll was up and running, but for now, it’s a lot less time consuming that sorting through the seemingly endless number of photos I have taken to document my life and my crochet.
