A lot of it has to do with the fact that we now keep children in the back seat at all times, and there are many instance in which there are not multiple children.

When I was a kid mor people had siblings and someone was always yelling to ride shotgun, so some of this has to do with the fact we have smaller families (no one to remind a parent that a kid is in the car) and that we put them in the back with everything else.
