Another language quirk that needs to be done away with is using"that" instead of "who." If you ever find yourself reading microfilms of the editorial pages of the AJC around the time of Reconstruction, you will notice that white southerners are referred to by the pronoun "who" while "carpetbaggers," "yankees," and the recently emancipated are referred to with the pronoun "that."

I tried to teach my students not to do this, but some were impervious to learning, no matter how many points I took off.
