I know I was taught that no matter how badly family treats you, they are family, and you are supposed to make some sort of permanent accommodation for that.

Plus, if you don't want to be with someone, you don't want to be with someone. I'm not sure why that can't be honored even if they didn't mistreat you in some criminal or psychologically abusive way.
