Having taught middle school for one year, I am convinced that these young people need more free time, and if you do it at school, all the better.

I used to incentivize my classes by allowing them 15 minutes of outdoor time (we had 90 minute classes) if we got all of our work done early.

I got the benefit of them not needing to be cajoled to do their math as they had a goal they were working toward, and their next teacher got 25–30 kids who had just gotten some fresh air, sunshine, and movement.

Of course, administration didn’t like it, but if you’re in a position to not care, sometimes that’s what you have to do.
