I realize all of that, but it is very hard to get a baby sitter for something like a wedding because it spans so many hours and often involves travel. It gets even harder if, GASP, the stated goal of the adults who need a babysitter is to get wasted at an out of town party.
More than one wasted parent has returned later than they said they would, refused to pay and left the unwitting babysitter with moral conundrum, HENCE, it's asking a lot of the world to have a childless wedding.
Hosts do get to make the rules, and guests have the right to decline a "party" with rules that they don't like.
