Whether or not it's your culture, twenty-seven states have filial responsibility laws where adult children are indeed responsible for their parents' care. How aggressive the states that have these laws varies,, but in most of the U.S. the answer to the question, "Am I my mother's keeper?" is yes.

So while I agree with your position 100%, there is work to be done at the legislatie level so that adult children are not held responsible for the financial decisions of another adult over whom they have no control.
